 Workshop Overview

Mindfulness-Based Expressive Arts, Yoga and Play Therapy: Supporting Self-Regulation and Resilience

Mindfulness is simply a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique. It is widely agreed that mindfulness has many important benefits including stress reduction, self-regulation, improved executive functioning, a greater sense of well-being and development of empathy, compassion and emotional intelligence. This two-day course explores how play therapists can apply mindfulness concepts to their work with children, adolescents and families through a variety of hands-on expressive arts, yoga and play therapy approaches. Participants will learn how mindfulness supports self-regulation and personal resilience through examples of current evidence-based research and through individual and group mindfulness activities that can be applied to work with young clients in mental health, medical and school settings.
